So, the funny thing about running a tracker site is that sometimes you’ll get DMCA takedown notices.

Once in a while, they’re from people who point out a config issue with the tracker… like what happened about a year ago, which caused me in particular a giant world of annoyance trying to fix a system I didn’t set up or fully grok at the time.

Other times, we get notices from folks who don’t too much appreciate what we do, because it sometimes ends up directly competing with what _they_ do. And … you know, nobody wants to starve. Which, being a fan of having my own livelihood, is a position I can’t really fault someone for having.

Well, that was what we got today. The DMCA notice from an actually interested party, that is.

You might notice a couple of torrents have gone missing. I’ll wait for someone who’s in a little closer cooperation with the group to make any relevant announcements, but … if you’re wondering why the torrent you were on disappeared, this might just be why. Just saying…

…. on the bright side, things like this DO give us a nice solution to the problem of data lifecycle management. If the people who own copyright on our old torrents send us takedowns, it means I can delete things!

Due to the recent announcement by FUNimation Entertainment that they will be streaming Shikabane Hime Aka on YouTube and Hulu, we have decided against releasing any episodes of this show. We are sorry if any of you were waiting for our version of this show and if so, we invite you to watch it legally when FUNimation releases it this Friday (October 24th).

It is unsure whether the AnimeONE & AnimeYuki team will be doing anything this season to replace Shikabane, but if we do, we’ll post something as soon as we release!

Thanks for your support.

Hello,

AnimeONE is always looking to bolster its ranks with new recruits. Our regular channel on Rizon, #aone-recruit, is easy to miss for most people who get their updates through the web. Therefore, we’re announcing here certain positions that we’re recruiting for the fall.

We’re primarily looking for translators and raw cappers. If you have a good knowledge of Japanese, as in being able to get a correct raw rendition of what is said, consider joining us. If you have access to .TS files for shows airing in Japan, we’re interested in you as well.

We are also looking to hire typesetters (TS) and quality checkers (QC). TS must be able to process effects in ASS and AFX. QCs have no specific qualification requirements, but you need to take a test before joining. If you think you are exceptionally talented in any other particular area, feel free to contact one of the ops in #aone-recruits.

What are the benefits of joining us? Well, I think we’re the oldest subbing group that’s still active; that’s easily seen in the amount of accumulated knowledge (and collective subbing years) in the staff channel. We’ve developed a reputation as a quality group that stresses timely releases without compromising quality. The techniques we use to maintain the quality include: a thorough review of the episode prior to release, close-knit teams that have good chemistry, and peer support for difficult parts of the job.

Aside from that, being part of the group means that you’ll be able to influence which show we subtitle. Also, unlike many other groups today, we won’t force you to stay up late at some ungodly hour just to meet a strict release deadline.

More than that though, the people here are among the friendliest and most welcoming of any group. Many people I’ve talked to have said that they joined AnimeONE because of the community. It truly is a great place to socialize and make lifelong friends. We’d like to invite you to be part of that community.

See you at #aone-recruit@irc.rizon.net

- crumja

About a month ago we migrated to a new server to deal with a couple of capacity problems, and since the migration we’ve been undergoing some intermittent issues — some related to the move, and others not directly so.

I’ve been working on dealing with them as they come up. But in the next couple days, if you see site downtime or tracker issues, it’s probably related to that…

As part of the resolution of an outstanding issue, I’ve had to do a bit of a tracker reset, and re-add various torrents. I have no way of assuring that I got them all, though, so if you are getting “not allowed” type errors on any given torrent, please let me know.

For you (and me too, ’cause I’m kinda a fan of it), they released Ah My Goddess – Tatakau Tsubasa 01. Seems …. to be pretty popular.

Hopefully we’ll have a better situation at the next release…

Happy Holidays folks!

Update (12-27-07): apparently somewhere in the apache config tweak process (or maybe at the last big apache upgrade a couple weeks ago) it forgot about a whole bunch of mime types, causing people with slightly more stupid browsers to try to save the files as avi’s instead of torrents (an old, well-known and easily-fixed issue). I’ve corrected this issue on the server side. Have a nice day.

So, apparently wp-hashcash has this feature that depends on curl support in php, and breaks if it doesn’t have it. And, as far as I can tell, the feature is that it goes out and updates itself, or at least checks its version against the developer’s site.

This is a bad thing, because of two reasons.

(1) when php is built without curl support, it breaks the blog, eventually. But not right away.

(2) when php is built with curl support and the dev’s site is nonresponsive, php as a whole is pretty much nonresponsive. Maybe not if we were using php as a cgi, but we’re in mod-php territory, and that means lots of nastiness.

This is a bit annoying, because the dev’s site is apparently down right now. So I’ve disabled the plugin, and we’re back to just akismet. Which is sort of annoying, because it’s going to mean more spam hits the filters.

Hashcash was so close to a good solution, too .
