The Allure of the GW Forums (Or Lack Thereof)

Posted by Mut in Uncategorized

I have been a member of the forum community for a very long time – since July 14th, 2003 to be exact. Since my registration I have been banned and unbanned on numerous occasions, promoted to moderator status, demoted to a regular member, once again promoted to moderator, site-banned, IP-banned, Klined and Glined from the IRC channel and server, and even had my forum account deleted then brought back only to have it shit on after being resurrected over a year and a half later. But I am still here. Why?!?

The GW forums is an interesting place. It’s the second forum I’ve become an active member in, first being the Counter-Strike forums (lol). In fact, right now, I’m not registered anywhere else as a forum member besides two other places, but I don’t usually post on one of them and don’t post at all on the other. So what is keeping me here? Honestly, I don’t have a clue. Maybe it’s because GW’s forum community is special to me. Perhaps much like an old group of friends, I don’t think I can let it vanish from my life. But like with any group of friends, we went through some drama. It’s kind of like a love and hate relationship. I just can’t seemed to give it up…

More on wp-hashcash and spamfighting

Posted by complich8 in Site News

So, apparently wp-hashcash has this feature that depends on curl support in php, and breaks if it doesn’t have it. And, as far as I can tell, the feature is that it goes out and updates itself, or at least checks its version against the developer’s site.

This is a bad thing, because of two reasons.

(1) when php is built without curl support, it breaks the blog, eventually. But not right away.

(2) when php is built with curl support and the dev’s site is nonresponsive, php as a whole is pretty much nonresponsive. Maybe not if we were using php as a cgi, but we’re in mod-php territory, and that means lots of nastiness.

This is a bit annoying, because the dev’s site is apparently down right now. So I’ve disabled the plugin, and we’re back to just akismet. Which is sort of annoying, because it’s going to mean more spam hits the filters.

Hashcash was so close to a good solution, too :(.

DMC 9…

Posted by lambchopsil in releases

Arg, I’m tired, but that’s for later…Here we have episode 9 of Devil May Cry. Great thanks to Conclave~

Edit: HQ version

If you consider yourself a fan of anime and manga, it might be a good idea to read the post below this one, posted by Mut. I can bet some of us can relate (although I can’t relate, since I don’t closet myself…)

And last of all, I’m tired because school must start soon. (BOOOO!!!!!) Damn it, like most people around, I procrastinate, and now I have a pile of summer AP/honors homework I gotta do…I hate summer work…*continues ranting offline*

I Am a Closet Anime Fan

Posted by Mut in Uncategorized

We all enjoy anime to some degree or another, and some people are very open about it. They visit Anime Expos, cosplay, and proudly associate themselves with it without the fear of detest from others. Others, not so much. Where I live and go to school, anime is a foreign interest. Not too many people are familiar with it and frankly, it isn’t something that’s brought up as an everyday conversation piece. In fact, outside of my e-friends that I’ve gained since I first got on the internet, I only know two people out of a few decent size groups of friends that I’ve ever spoken to about anime. Even with those people, anime has never been brought up no more than a hand full of times. And If people do know what “anime” is, finding out that you’re into anime will make them get a bad impression of you because anime has a negative connotation. People think anime fans are socially awkward, nerdy, and someone they wouldn’t want to affiliate with. And as an Asian American male, I’m already associated with it by default! This may just be my own narrow experience, but I’m sure there are some people out there who can agree and relate. (more…)

Here we go with another episode of Galaxy Railways II. It’s ep 12 in the lovely .mp4 file format. Don’t forget that it’s a joint venture with Froth-Bite! Props to them for helping out.

no more captcha

Posted by complich8 in Site News

I’m tired of seeing \\\\\\\\’s all over the place, so I’ve decided it’s time to move away from captcha and its comment-mangling validation code. Now we’re using wp-hashcash for spambot checking.

What that means for you is: if you want to post a comment, you’ll need javascript enabled, instead of needing to enter a captcha. Meaning, if you’re using a browser that’s relatively current and relatively sane, you won’t have to do anything.
